Volvo has plans to release a plug-in diesel hybrid, with a planned release by 2012.

The Swedish automaker, Volvo, announced it’s intention to develop a plug-in hybrid vehicle that would be powered by both an electric motor and a diesel engine.  They said their intention is to have this new vehicle in production by 2012.  This comes amid talks of the Ford owned company possibly being on the market and looking for a new owner.

“We are focusing strongly on plug-in hybrids in order to meet the demands for low CO2 emissions and to provide sustainable road transportation.  We naturally expect that the relevant authorities will offer subsidies to boost developments, speeding up the creation of a market for this type of car” said the Stephen Odell, Volvo’s CEO in a statement released to the media.

Although there is no details into what the vehicle will look like, Volvo has said that it expects the vehicle’s total range to be about 745 miles the fuel economy would average out to around 125 mpg.  Volvo also did not say how long the vehicle would take to charge (which means they are probably still developing it) but the automaker did say that the plug-in hybrid will be capable of about 31 miles on straight electric power.
