A couple of years ago, Toyota recalled several models which also included a few from the Lexus brand.  The recall was due the design of floor mats and the accelerator getting stuck all the way down, causing the vehicle to accelerate completely out of control.  However, Toyota has now announced that they are now voluntarily recalling 2.17 million more due to the same issue.  Not looking good for a company that brags about how they have the best customer loyalty and reliable cars.

The issue with the floor mats became widespread back in 2009 after a deadly accident that killed a family of 4 who were driving a Lexus ES 350 loaner car.  It is highly recommended that people participate in this voluntary recall.  These vehicles include:

  • 2003 – 2009 Toyota 4Runner (603,000 units)
  • 2004-2006 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid (397,000 units)
  • 2006-2010 Toyota Rav4 (761,000 units)
  • 2008-2011 Lexus LX 570 (17,000 units)
  • 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300 & 350 AWD Models (20,000 units)
  • 2004-2007 Lexus RX 330, 350 and 400h (372,000 units)

Toyota has been facing some hard times when it comes to the reliability of their vehicles.  Most recently the Toyota Prius (which is a horrible car) has had issues with the vehicle speeding out of control as well in 2010, although there was no confirmation that this was due to mechanical or electronic failure in the car as of yet.  They did say they will be sending out  notices to vehicle owners by first-class mail, and dealerships will fix the issue with no cost to the owner.

So, you still planning to buy a Toyota yet?
