Will the new chinese owned Hummer brand be headquartered in Detroit?
General Motors is currently under negotiation with Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation to purchase the Hummer brand away from them. Now there is talk that the brand name, even though Chinese owned, may be headquartered in the Detroit area.
The Hummer headquarters would run day to day operations like other Detroit automakers, although in a reduced capacity. Design, engineering, product planning, marketing and finance would all be handled in the company’s main headquarters. It is currently not known how many of the existing Hummer employees would be hired on by the Chinese owners.
Nick Richards of Hummer informed the Detroit News that Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation would look to employ somewhere around 100 people in a Detroit headquarters, and eventually hiring a maximum of 300 employees.
Michigan’s Economic Development Authority has currently offered up to $20.6 million in tax credits over 10 years to Sichuan Tengzhong. The state estimates that nearly 650 related jobs would be created by Hummer creating a Detroit headquarters.
