McLaren announced that they will be coming out with the new McLaren MP4-12C, the latest in their line of supercars to compete against cars like the new Ferrari 458 Italia.  It’s beautiful in design and goes back to the original wedge shape which made the F1 a legend for the car manufacturer.

Expected to go into production in 2010, McLaren announced that only 1000 of these will be made initially, and with a hefty price tag of $250,000.  But considering what you get, you can understand why this is a fantastic piece of art.

It comes with a 3.8-liter mid-mounted, twin turbocharged V8 delivering 600 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque.  The new gearbox, called the SSG (Seamless Shift Gearbox) allows the driver to half-press one of the shift paddles in order to preselect the next gear ahead of a downshift or upshift, which in turn shortens the overall shift time.  The structure of the car is made up of carbon fiber, which makes for a very light car of only 3000 lbs.  The body panels are also made of aluminum and SMC plastic.

McLaren expects the MP4-12C to be one a top sellers, and hopes to also have it under the legendary status of most of their cars.
