Recently, several automakers have announced plans to finally sell an electric car to the public, in what appears to be a race to see who can get this car on the road and who has the best technology.
Last year General Motors announced they will be selling the Chevrolet Volt, which they say will be one of their top selling models within a year. It has a electric engine, but I think the one thing that people question is the fact that is still has a gas engine which is used to charge the batteries when they get low. You almost have to wonder what ever happened to the technology they once praised with the EV-1. Even so, the car can get 640 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas.
Then most recently Nissan announced their electric car: the Leaf. This car has no gas engine and no emissions at all. It runs off a electric engine powered by a large battery pack located underneath the cabin. It even comes with all the bells and whistles inside like most of their models. However, it only gets 100 miles to the full charge.
Honda also today announced they will be revealing in October their own electric vehicle at the Tokyo Car Show. However, there is no reliable information on what they will have. In June, Mitsubishi Motors Corp., launched its own electric vehicle for $48,300. Ford’s also releasing their first electric vehicle as well: a commercial van, which will be launching sometime next year.
The real question is: will you buy one of these?
