Is the Audi R8 going green?
With a quote like “Electricity Untamed” you have to wonder what the German’s automakers at Audi have in mind with this. The rumor going around is that Audi has plans to release a electric version of their current supercar, the Audi R8. A teaser on Audi’s website has made speculation that this may happen.
The rumors of a Audi electric car surfaced in May, 2009 during the same time when Mercedes said they were going to release a all electric version of their Mercedes SLS supercar. It was then that either the Audi R8, the Audi TT, or some kind of variant would be made when a picture was posted on Audi’s web site with a sketch of what the car might look like. The name “Audi R8 ePerformance” also has been thrown around and it is said to replace the upcoming DOA R8 TDI.
The fact that Audi is coming out with electric cars makes perfect sense. Especially with the boost it got from the German government which wants to see 1 million electric cars on the road by 202o (see link), and may have got a financial boost to make that possible. But honestly one has to ask not only Audi, but also Mercedes: “Why make a supercar, which is designed to be fast and fantastic, into a green loving electric car”?
