General Motors announced that they will be spending $230 million on four different plants in the Flint, Michigan area to support the production of the upcoming Chevy Volt plug-in vehicle.  The money will also be used to help build the 2011 Chevy Cruze, which is also made from a similar platform as the Volt.

“These four GM manufacturing plants have a key role in GM’s production of the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles, the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze,” said GM Manufacturing Manager, Larry Zahner.  “The men and women at these plants are working hard to exceed their quality and cost objectives while maintaining a relentless focus on safety and improved efficiency.”

The funds will be divided between four factories in the Flint area, which is Flint Engine South, Flint Metal Center, Flint Tool & Die, and Grand Blanc Weld Tool Center.  With more money in these plants, they are expecting to bring back about 500 GM employees back to work.

Flint’s factories will support the Chevy Volt’s production, which the primary building of the vehicle being done at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant.  The Cruze will be going into production at the company’s Lordstown, Ohio plant.

The bulk of the money, estimated at around $202 million, will be used to get the Flint Engine South plant ready to produce the 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to be used in the Vole and Cruze.  Once ready, the plant will have the capability to produce up to 800 engines per day, but will have a cap of 40 per day until sales increase more to require it.

All four of the GM factories will be up and running by fall, 2011.
