The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice are in trouble.  They are being sued by an insurance company out of Michigan for crashing a Ferrari F50 which was apparently totaled by a FBI agent.  The Ferrari at the time was being stored by the federal agency for being stolen in 2003.

The Ferrari was stolen from a dealership in Rosemount, Pennsylvania back in 2003.  The dealership then filed a claim with Motors Insurance Corp in Michigan, which gave restitution back in the amount of $750,000.  The vehicle was then recovered by FBI agents in Kentucky and arrested the thief.  While waiting for trial, the vehicle was stored as evidence.  However, in May, 2009 an FBI agent decided to take it out for a joy ride.  Everything was good except when he lost control of the Ferrari and hit a tree.

After Motors Insurance Corp found out about this, they filed a claim against both the FBI and the US Department of Justice for the amount of $750,000.  Both federal agencies have rejected the claim, saying that because the Ferrari was being detained at the time by the FBI they are exempt from it.  The insurance company then submitted requests under the Freedom of Information Act to get documentation on how the vehicle was stored, transported and handled.  Most of these requests was denied by federal exemptions.  The only information they did retrieve was an e-mail stating that U.S. Assistant Attorney J. Hamilton Thompson and  Special Agent Frederick C. Kingston were operating the vehicle at the time when it fishtailed out of control and slid sideways into a tree just after leaving the FBI storage warehouse.

Motors Insurance Corp is now suing the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice to have them release more information in regards to the Ferrari F50 and the incident.
