BMW i Models
Like many of the automakers out there, BMW has been working on a new range of green, high tech vehicles. So far, they have done a brilliant job. A few good examples of this are their Vision EfficientDynamics supercar and the Vision ConnectedDrive roadster. However people didn’t know what they had in mind to name this new line of eco-friendly vehicles…. until now, when it was announced that the new range will be simply called “i” This will be BMW’s “sustainable vehicles and mobility solutions” division and set to be released in 2013.
The first two models planned to be released are the i3 and i8, which are pictured in the image above, will also be known as the MegaCity and Vision EfficientDynamics production cars. No news has been given if the Vision ConnectedDrive will go to production yet. The i8 is set to be assembled out of Leipzig, while the i3 has not yet been assigned yet.
Along with their green vehicle line, BMW has founded a company called “i Ventures” which is a holding company based out of New York with $100 million in financial backing. The company was designed to “vehicle-independent services” such as smart phone apps that work with the BMW i model lineup.
Speaking of the lineup, BMW i models will not be limited to just electric vehicles, according to Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of marketing. The German automaker has announced that they will expand to other fuel efficient and alternative technologies as well. This may include more efficient diesel vehicles, hybrids, motorcycles, trikes, and even 2 or 3 wheeled scooters.
It appears that BMW is looking to take the lead when it comes green vehicles, and may be the industry leader in 2013 if things keep going their way.
