It appears that Audi is planning to discontinue all development of their V10 engines.  These same engines types are located in some of their top models, including their supercar, the Audi R8.  One particular version that’s found in the Audi RS6 is already scheduled to no longer be produced.

According to Autobild, a German Car Magazine, the RS6 and R8 will likely take the same direction as the M5, by switching to turbo V8′s instead. That means the R8 will continue to come in two variants, but instead of a V8 and a V10, there will be two V8 options, one turbocharged and one that isn’t.

These planned changes are going to take some time before they come into effect.  Audi says it could take several years yet before all V10 engines are completely gone.  It is not known if this is a smart move for the German automaker, but it should be noted that Mercedes-Benz plans to discontinue making V12′s, which means they may be following suit.
