With Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG given the “OK” for production, Audi appears to be following suit with the e-tron electric concept.  The car first appeared at last months Frankfurt Auto Show where some people were skeptical if this would even make it to dealerships.

“I expect we will see running examples in the next 24 months,” said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen.  It is expected that the vehicle will make it to showrooms by 2012.

Visually, the e-tron looks very similar to Audi’s supercar: the R8.  However, if you look very closely there are some size differences between the two cars.  First off the e-tron is 6.5 inches shorter than the R8, and 168 inches in length  which makes it only slightly larger than the TT.  It will be powered by four electric motors and a large lithium-ion battery pack.  Estimates say that the motors will have a power of 3,319 lb-ft of torque which allows a possible speed of 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, while still providing an all-electric range of 158 miles.

Currently there is no pricing available for the Audi e-tron, but it is estimated to be in the six figure range.
