Audi A5 Coupe Prototype

Audi A5 Coupe Prototype

Audi is developing a lightweight prototype of it’s Audi A5 Coupe.  The difference on this car?  It’s 100kg lighter than a standard A5 coupe due to using aluminum and carbon fiber instead of steel.

The A5 Coupe Prototype is the latest example of the great work that is being done for the German automaker.  The new car is taking it’s existing steel bodied design and replacing it with an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF).  This is the same architecture that is used for the R8 and TT sports coupe.  Using this engineering makes the car much lighter.  It now weighs a very light 2,888lbls. compared to the 3,130lbs. in the standard A5 Coupe.  It is also powered now by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder TFSi engine that produces 211hp.

At the moment, it is not yet determined if the A5 Coupe Prototype will ever actually be made in production.  A lot of talk on this car points it towards a testing car for new technology to produce other models.  One such in discussion of the Audi RS5 and the possibility of it coming to the U.S. for sales in 2011.
